Interaction

Single Tap

Single tap the screen and the toolbar appears along the top of the screen and the kaleidoscope pauses.

Single tap again and the toolbar disappears and the kaleidoscope starts up again.

Shaking your Device

If the current kaleidoscope is not your cup of tea or when a song ends, shake your device and a brand new one is generated for your enjoyment.

Tilting the Screen

Tipping the screen changes gravity's effect on the gems in the kaleidoscope.

Hold the screen before you at eye level — While you're upright, hold your device before your eyes so that the screen is not pointing up or down, but is level (pointed at the wall behind your head).   I prefer to orient the device so it is wider than it is tall.   Now gravity is not acting on the gems, they are trying to maintain their speed but are slightly slowed by drag and bounce off the edges and center of the device.

Tip the top of the device toward you for a few seconds.   Now the screen is pointing slightly toward the floor — You have started a force that pushes the gems out from the center and toward the edges.   When they pass the edge of the screen, they will soon rebound.

Tip the bottom of the device toward you for a few seconds.   Now the screen is pointing slightly toward the ceiling — You have reversed force so that now the gems are drawn toward the center of the screen.

Control the motion of the gems by short, slight tips of the screen — By carefully tilting the screen you can get all the gems under your control.   The gems begin each kaleidoscope with a random velocity, and each has a slightly different weight so that they have more or less momentum — just to keep things interesting.

Pinching and Spreading

Warp Time — Pinch two fingers together to slow down time to a crawl.   Not only can this time control stretch out your enjoyment of a great kaleidoscope, but it can also make it a snap to get a perfect screen capture.

Spread two fingers apart to speed the kaleidoscope up to Warp speed!

Double Tapping

Double tap the screen to save the current image to the photos app where you can set it as your wallpaper or use it like any other photo in your library.

On iOS 4+ devices — Up to ten of your songs will be analyzed and will be used to make the kaleidoscope react to the music.   The effects can be truly hypnotic!

Please Note: some songs can not be analyzed due to incompatible format or digital rights protection.   Also it requires some space to store the analysis, so you may need to free up some room on your device for this very cool effect to work for you.

When the top toolbar is showing, Tap the Close button on the toolbar to close the toolbar and resume the Kaleidoscope.

Troubleshooting

If all the gems quickly move into the center of the kaleidoscope, the problem is that you are looking down at the kaleidoscope, the screen is pointing toward the sky, and gravity is sucking the gems into the center of the screen.   To change this, lift the device so that it is higher than your head, and tilt the screen down toward your eyes so that it is pointing down at you.   Hold it like this and notice that the screen is pointing toward the ground, and that after a few seconds the gems are now being pushed out from the center and toward the edge of the screen.   It is the angle of the screen, not it's height that controls the affect of gravity.
